Real people, real conversations — that's the pitch

HelloTalk drops you straight into conversations with native speakers. No flashcards, no grammar drills, no robotic voice repeating "the pen is under the table." You pick a language you're learning — Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French, whatever — and the app matches you with someone who's learning your native language. You help them, they help you. It's a straight trade.

The chat interface is where most of the work happens. You type in your target language, and your partner replies in theirs. There's a built-in correction tool: tap a message, highlight a mistake, and suggest the fix. The other person sees it right there, inline. It feels less like a lesson and more like a friend nudging you. "Hey, you wrote 'I go to store' — you meant 'I went to the store.'" That kind of thing. Voice messages and video calls are there too, if you're brave enough.

There's also a Moments feed, sort of like a social timeline for language learners. People post photos, ask questions, share short updates in their target language. Others correct them in the comments. It's low-pressure — you can just scroll and read if you're not ready to post. The app also has a built-in translator, pronunciation audio, and a character-writing tool for languages like Chinese or Japanese. Handy, but don't lean on the translator too much. The point is to struggle a little.

The free tier gives you plenty: unlimited chats, corrections, and Moments. Paid subscriptions unlock things like ad removal, grammar analysis, and more detailed corrections. At 3.39 stars on the Play Store, reviews are mixed. Some people love the real-world practice. Others complain about spam, inactive users, or that the matching algorithm sends you the same people over and over. It's not polished like Duolingo. It's rougher. But that roughness is also the point.

If you're the kind of person who learns by talking, not by tapping buttons, give it a shot. One tip: fill out your profile with a clear photo and a short bio in the language you're learning. You'll get better matches, and people will actually want to talk to you.
