Editor's Review

My kid colored a cat that started meowing, and I didn't even panic

Look, I've downloaded a lot of "educational" games for my four-year-old. Most of them are either glorified noise machines or they expect a toddler to follow a ten-step tutorial. Coloring, Music and Games from Orange Studios Games is different in a way that actually surprised me. It's exactly what the name says — a collection of coloring pages, simple music-making tools, and mini-games — but it doesn't try to be more than that. And that's its biggest strength.

The coloring section is the heart of the app. You pick a picture — animals, vehicles, princesses, that sort of thing — and then you tap to fill areas with color. No precision needed, no tiny lines to stay inside. My kid just pokes at the screen and the color fills the shape. There's a little magic in watching a black-and-white elephant turn purple because that's what a three-year-old thinks elephants should be. The music part is a simple grid of notes or animal sounds. Tap a button, hear a sound. It's not going to teach your kid to play piano, but it's great for cause-and-effect learning. The games are even simpler: memory matching, popping bubbles, sorting shapes. Nothing revolutionary, but they work without frustration.

What I appreciate most is the lack of pressure. There are no timers screaming at you, no "you lost" screens, no ads that trick a kid into clicking something they shouldn't. The interface is big and colorful, with buttons that are easy for small fingers. You can hand this to a two-year-old and they'll figure it out in seconds. The app does have in-app purchases, but they're not shoved in your face every five seconds. You can play a lot without paying a cent.

Is it going to teach your kid to read or do math? No. But that's not the point. This is a sandbox for creativity and simple fun. If you've got a kid under five who likes to color and make noise (and let's be honest, that's all of them), this is worth a download. Just turn the volume down before they start playing with the music section. Trust me on that one.
